Pediatric and OB Trauma
Program Overview
Pediatric and OB Trauma is a course combining two talks offered in Series 3 of Trauma University, presented at TCAA's 2019 Annual Conference - 1) Pediatric Trauma Resuscitation and 2)Obstetrical Trauma: Double Jeopardy. Course topics are contributed by TCAA members and are designed to provide practitioners with clinical education opportunities. The purpose of this activity is to gain a better understanding of risk, assessment, and treatment of trauma in pregnant women and their babies.

Target Audience: The Trauma healthcare team and other clinical departments

Learning Objectives
At the conclusion of this course, the learner should be better able to:
1. Employ improved risk analysis in this patient population
2. Develop an understanding of acute diagnostic factors associated with abruption
3. Structure an algorhythm to minimize both maternal and fetal morbidity
4. Describe the approach to pediatric trauma resuscitations
5. Identify questions being asked and explored that may alter pediatric trauma resuscitation in the future

Presenter Bio

James W. Eubanks, III, M.D. attended the University of Mississippi (Ole Miss), receiving a BS in Pharmacy. He subsequently attended medical school at the University of Mississippi Medical Center in Jackson, MS. He then completed a general surgery residency at the University of Tennessee Health Science Center in Memphis, TN in 2000 followed by a pediatric surgery fellowship at The University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center (Dallas Children's Hospital) in 2002. Returning to Memphis, he started his practice seeing patients at Le Bonheur Children's Hospital and St. Jude Children's Research Hospital, serving as a teaching faculty member of the University of Tennessee Health Science Center. Dr. Eubanks served as Trauma Medical Director for Le Bonheur Children's Hospital from 2004-2018, and since 2015 he has served as Surgeon-in-Chief. Additionally, he serves as Chief of the Division of Pediatric Surgery at the University of Tennessee Health Science Center where he holds the position as an Associate Professor of Surgery and Pediatrics. Dr. Eubanks is a member of numerous national organizations including: Eastern Association for the Surgery of Trauma (EAST) American Pediatric Surgical Association (APSA) International Pediatric Endosurgery Group (IPEG) Society of Critical Care Medicine (SCCM) Trauma Center Association of America (TCAA) Dr. Eubanks currently serves on committees of various organizations including: Board of Directors of the Trauma Center Association of America (TCAA) Practice Committee of the American Pediatric Surgery Association (APSA) Trauma Outcomes Committee of the National Quality Forum (NQF) Research and Clinical Interests: Pediatric Trauma, Chest Wall Abnormalities, Foregut Anomalies, Minimally Invasive Surgery, Surgical Quality University and Hospital Appointments: Chief, Division of Pediatric Surgery, Associate Professor of Surgery and Pediatrics, Surgeon-in-Chief, Le Bonheur.

Sydney Vail, MD, FACS Chairman Department of Surgery, member Division of Trauma, Surgical Critical Care& Acute Care Surgery. MIHS/Maricopa Medical Center, Phoenix, AZ. Associate Professor of Surgery, Creighton University School of Medicine-Phoenix Attended medical school at Georgetown University School of Medicine, General Surgery residency at Albert Einstein Medical Center in Philadelphia, PA and 2 years of fellowship, Trauma & Emergency Surgery and Surgical Critical Care, at the University of Miami/Jackson Memorial Hospital. Dr. Vail had been a Trauma Medical Director for 16 years of his 21 year career and is presently the Chairman of the Dept. of Surgery at MIHS/Maricopa Medical Center. He is a graduate of the Advisory Boards Academy Fellowship in Executive leadership, holding several leadership positions during his career. He is an active clinical surgeon and teacher and provides outreach education and presentations across the United States. Dr. Vail is a consultant and educator to several branches of our military special operations forces medical personnel, law enforcement, Dept. of Homeland Security's medical teams and Customs and Border Patrol. He is a deploying member of the AZ DPS/State Police SWAT team providing Tactical Medical Support and is the EMS Director for Customs & Border Protection Tucson and Yuma Sectors. He lectures nationally on trauma & disaster topics, prolonged field care and law enforcement issues as well as publishes on the same topics.
