Pdf Summary
This presentation on succession planning, led by Melissa N. Hall, explains how trauma centers can build leadership continuity and reduce disruption when key leaders leave unexpectedly. It defines succession planning as a strategic, systematic process for identifying and developing internal talent so organizations maintain performance, retain knowledge, and prepare future leaders.

The session emphasizes why succession planning matters: it improves business continuity, supports employee retention, strengthens leadership pipelines, reduces risk during sudden departures, and helps preserve critical institutional knowledge. It also outlines common barriers, including resistance to change, unclear selection criteria, weak training, limited executive support, and insufficient resources.

For trauma programs, succession planning is especially important in high-risk areas such as trauma verification, performance improvement, registry operations, stakeholder relationships, injury prevention, budgeting, and system partnerships. The presenter recommends starting early, using formal tools like the 9-box grid and readiness heat maps, and reassessing talent annually. A structured process is proposed: identify critical roles, assess performance and potential, place employees on the 9-box grid, identify successors, create individualized development plans, and review progress regularly.

The presentation also describes practical development strategies, including mentoring, coaching, job shadowing, cross-training, leadership projects, and formal education. A 70-20-10 development model is recommended: 70% stretch assignments, 20% mentoring/coaching, and 10% formal learning.

Additional guidance includes aligning succession planning with organizational strategy, investing in human capital, tracking key metrics, and building a 12-month implementation roadmap. The session concludes with case studies showing the consequences of having—or lacking—a succession plan, and highlights best practices such as planning early, communicating openly, preparing for emergencies, and documenting knowledge transfer.
