2018 Trauma University: Active Shooter
Program Overview
Active Shooter, is a course offered in series two of Trauma University, which debuted at TCAA's 2018 Annual Conference. Course topics are contributed by TCAA members and are designed to provide practitioners with clinical education opportunities. The purpose of this activity is to provide guidance on dealing with active shooter incidents.

Target Audience: The Trauma healthcare team and other clinical departments

Learning Objectives
At the conclusion of this course, the learner should be better able to:
1. Discuss how to prepare for an active shooter situation

2. Explore different active shooter scenarios in and out of hospital
3. Describe issues related to situational awareness

Presenter Bio
Sydney Vail, MD, FACS is Chairman of the Department of Surgery and a member of the Division of Trauma, Surgical Critical Care& Acute Care Surgery at Valleywise Health Medical Center (formally MIHS/Maricopa Medical Center), in Phoenix, AZ. He is also Associate Professor of Surgery at Creighton University School of Medicine-Phoenix . He is an active clinical surgeon and teacher, and provides outreach education and presentations across the United States.
Dr. Vail is a consultant and educator to several branches of our military special operations forces medical personnel, law enforcement, Dept. of Homeland Security medical teams and Customs and Border Patrol. He is a deploying member of the AZ DPS/State Police SWAT team providing Tactical Medical Support and is the EMS Director for Customs & Border Protection Tucson and Yuma Sectors. He lectures nationally on trauma & disaster topics, prolonged field care and law enforcement issues, as well as publishes on the same topics.
