Early recognition of Non-Accidental Trauma (NAT) is essential to improving outcomes for vulnerable pediatric patients. This webinar will review evidence-based definitions of physical child abuse, highlight the clinical and radiologic features of Abusive Head Trauma (AHT), demonstrate the use of the TEN-4-FACESp screening tool to identify sentinel injuries, and discuss the components of a comprehensive NAT evaluation, including laboratory testing, imaging, and multidisciplinary consultation. Participants will gain practical strategies to improve diagnostic accuracy, documentation, and the timely management of suspected child abuse.

Objectives:

• Establish clear, evidence-based definitions for physical child abuse to ensure standardized reporting and documentation.
• Identify the key radiological and clinical indicators associated with Abusive Head Trauma (AHT).
• Use the TEN-4-FACESp screening tool to identify sentinel injuries in pediatric acute care settings.
• Navigate the components of a standard Non-Accidental Trauma (NAT) evaluation, including laboratory testing, imaging, and specialist consultations.

Presenter: Missy Anderson

Bio: Missy Anderson is a long-time pediatric nurse with 25+ years of nursing with a special interest in Trauma, Emergency Medicine, Pre-hospital Care, and Injury Prevention. She is a graduate of the University of Iowa with a bachelor’s degree in nursing and received her master’s degree in business administration from California State University, Sacramento. Prior to leaving the bedside, Missy was a Pediatric Emergency Department nurse at Level 1 Pediatric Trauma Center in California for 12 years as well as a flight nurse for 6 years. Missy has a passion for legislation and policy and serves on the American Trauma Society Legislative Committee. She also serves on the Eastern Association for Surgery of Trauma Injury Control and Violence Prevention Committee. Her research interest involves injury prevention and improving prehospital care of injured children and has several publications in these areas. Missy works as the Trauma Program Director at Swedish Medical Center.
