Traumatic Brain Injury PART THREE: Management of Traumatic Brain Injury & Case Studies

Description:

According to the CDC, in 2021, there were more than 586 TBI-related hospitalizations and 190 TBI-related deaths per day. These numbers do not include concussions or mild TBIs that were discharged from the emergency department. According to Schneider (2021), approximately 47.4% of individuals over the age of 40 have a history of TBI and are living with a disability.

Based on evaluation data from the TCAA’s on-demand learning system, many healthcare providers have requested additional education on TBIs. In response, TCAA’s Education Committee has developed a nine-part series covering the continuum of care, from EMS to discharge to the community. The series will conclude with a session on coding TBI-related injuries. Each webinar will feature healthcare providers from across the United States.

Objectives:

  • Determine timely indications for neurosurgical consultation
  • Establish criteria for repeat imaging and surgical intervention
  • Identify patients at high risk of neurological deterioration

Moderator: Dr. Britt Christmas

Presenters: John E. Greer and Philippe Mercier

Bios:

Dr. John E. Greer was born in Roanoke, Virginia and is a graduate of the University of Virginia. He obtained his medical degree and doctoral degree at Virginia Commonwealth University in Richmond, VA. He completed his residency training in Neurosurgery at Virginia Commonwealth University. He earned a PhD in Neuroscience studying axonal injury in the setting of mild traumatic brain injury. Dr. Greer is a fellow of and board-certified by the American Association of Neurological Surgeons. In addition to his surgical practice at VCU Health, he is Section Chief of Neurosurgery at the VA Medical Center in Richmond, VA. He also continues to maintain a basic science/translational research lab with NIH funding to study cortical network dysfunction following traumatic brain injury.

Dr. Philippe Mercier is a Canadian trained MD, PhD (University of Saskatchewan).  He completed his neurosurgical residency at the University of Calgary with Pediatric Neurorsurgical fellowship in Memphis at La Bonheur/St. Jude's in 2014.  He was recruited by Saint Louis University where he quickly became Division Director of Pediatric Neurosurgery and then the Division Director of the Neurosurgical program.  His surgical expertise involve surgical epilepsy, neuro-oncology and trauma in pediatrics and adults.  He has over 40 peer reviewed publications and is currently collaborating with industry and the Department of Defense developing a clinical trial investigating the use of a medication in the treatment of traumatic brain injury.
