Description:

This case study will examine the rescue and medical management of an adult male located in the water by boat patrol. After an apparent vessel strike, the patient presented with a GCS of 3. How would your team manage this incident when it comes through the TA page? 

Objectives:

  • Understand the importance of pre-hospital care.
  • Discuss the importance of pre-hospital report.
  • Demonstrate the importance pre-arrival planning of critical injured patients.
  • Execute multi-disciplinary team approach to limb salvage.
  • Name and correct factors contributing the Diamond of Death.

Bio: 
Travis A Arnold-Lloyd is a Trauma and Critical Care Surgeon at HCA Trident Hospital.

Michelle Houck began her emergency medicine career as a volunteer in South Carolina in the early 1990s, becoming certified as a paramedic then receiving her nursing degree in 2003. The majority of Michelle’s prehospital and nursing careers have been at Level I Trauma Centers, where she discovered her love for mentoring. She has supported numerous students from EMS, nursing and medical schools, as well as serving as a preceptor for new emergency department staff into the difficult job of high-performance, high-level trauma care. She has been the Trauma Outreach Coordinator at Trident Medical Center since 2018 and has taught trauma-based courses across the Carolinas. In 2023, she was honored the be named Emergency Nurse of the Year by the South Carolina EMS Association.
